FAQ

Emergency Dental Care — Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions emergency patients ask most when they call Pearl Dentistry of New Kensington.

What qualifies as a dental emergency? +
Dental emergencies include: severe or sudden tooth pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a dental abscess or swelling, lost fillings or crowns causing pain, cracked teeth, and oral trauma. As a general rule: if it's causing significant pain, swelling, or bleeding — call us immediately at (724) 213-7840.
How quickly can I be seen? +
We make every effort to see emergency patients the same day. We keep time in our schedule for urgent cases. Call (724) 213-7840 as soon as possible and describe your emergency — the sooner you call, the sooner we can help.
What do I do if my tooth gets knocked out? +
Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. Gently rinse it with water but do not scrub it. If possible, place it back in the empty socket. If not, keep it moist in milk or saliva. Then call us immediately — time is critical. A tooth can often be saved if you act within 30–60 minutes.
Should I go to the ER instead? +
For dental emergencies, a dentist is almost always a better choice than the ER. ERs typically cannot treat the underlying dental problem — they can only manage pain or prescribe antibiotics temporarily. Call us first and we'll advise you on the best course of action. The ER is appropriate for severe facial trauma, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or jaw fractures.
What if I have dental anxiety during an emergency? +
We understand that dental emergencies are already stressful, and anxiety can make it worse. Our entire team is trained to help anxious patients feel calm and in control. Please let us know when you call, and we will take extra time to explain everything and ensure your comfort throughout every step of your emergency visit.
Do you accept insurance for emergency visits? +
We do not accept most insurance plans. We only accept Aetna and UPMC Dental Advantage insurance.
What happens during an emergency dental visit? +
When you arrive, our team will prioritize your comfort and get you into a treatment room quickly. We'll take digital X-rays to diagnose the problem accurately, discuss your options, then provide immediate treatment to relieve your pain. Before you leave, we'll provide instructions and schedule any follow-up care needed to fully restore your tooth.
Can a dental abscess be life-threatening? +
A dental abscess is a serious infection that can spread to your jaw, neck, and in rare cases, the brain or bloodstream. If you have severe swelling in your face or neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing, fever, or feel very unwell — call 911 or go to the ER immediately. For a standard abscess without these symptoms, call us right away for same-day care.
How can I manage pain before my appointment? +
Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help temporarily reduce dental pain and inflammation. Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods on the affected tooth. If your face is swollen, a cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek for 15–20 minutes can help. These are temporary measures only — please seek professional care as soon as possible.
Can I call after hours for a dental emergency? +
Please call our office at (724) 213-7840 and listen carefully to the message for instructions on after-hours emergency contact options. For emergencies involving severe swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or significant trauma, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately.
